Is Cannoneris
The forest of Is Cannoneris is a very popular tourist destination for the beauty of its plant and animal life, and is considered as one of the richest forests in the sulcitana area. It is not uncommon to sight the Sardinian deer and other animals. The forest can be travelled around along its principal and secondary tracks (some paths or mule tracks) thanks to a system of well signposted trails to aid the excursionist.
It is a vast forest complex that covers 4768 hectares, entirely covered in holm oak woods, Mediterranean brush and conifers.
The forest is ploughed by numerous impluvia along which seasonal watercourses flow. The main water courses are: Mitza su Filisargiu, Rio Isca de Crapitta, Canale de su Marigosu, Riu Sa Truba and Sa Para, Riu su Pizianti, and Canale Medau Angiu.
Within the forest, heights vary between 225 m to 979m above sea level on top of Monte Punta Sebera.
The forest is a remarkable wildlife protection oasis. In its territory a large number of Sardinian deer and fallow deer have been reintroduced. Wild boar and other animals such as foxes, weasels, wild cats and dormice are also living in the forest. Among the avifauna it is possible to see beautiful specimens of golden eagle, peregrine falcon, lesser kestrel, raven and woodcock. In the locality of Is Concas de S’Arrideli, on the border with the forest complex of Monte Nieddu, are also numerous specimens, some very large, of Etna broom.
How to get there
The forest is reached by going along a road that comes out of the town of Domus de Maria, and after 13 km reaches the locality of Sedda Is Tovus, situated near the forest barracks. The forest is connected to the State Forest of Piscinamanna, Gutturu Mannu, Pantaleo and Monte Nieddu, and is positioned at its centre.
